The "Hamburger Bürgerkapitänsmusik" (H 822a-b, Wq deest), consisting of an oratorio and a serenata, was composed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in 1780 for the annual meeting of the captains of the Hamburg Navy. With trumpets and timbal, allegorical figures such as vice and virtue, war was confronted with peace. Followed by the choir of patriots, the love of one's country wins. Envy, commotion and deceitfulness forgave oneanother. They celebrated the recovered order and the flourishing commerce.
